A system of release
Have you ever driven your automobile with the brakes on? I suppose that most of us who have driven for any length of time have had that experience. I can remember times when I have arrived at my destination, reached down to pull on the parking brake, and found that it had been on all the time that I had been driving.’ What a ridiculous way to drive a car!
Not only was it inefficient—the miles per gallon must have been a lot less than they usually were—but it wasn’t very good for the car either. If one did much driving with the brakes on, the brake linings wouldn’t last very
Perhaps you have had this experience. You pulled away from the curb in your car, and as you drove along you began to wonder what was wrong. The car seemed sluggish, didn’t have the pep and pick-up you had come to expect. You had just had the engine tuned. It should be functioning well, but even pushing harder on the accelerator didn’t seem to help very much. And when you took your foot off the gas pedal the car slowed down dragging, inhibiting friction of the braking mechanism, how did you feel? Sure, there was the “Aha!” feeling that you have when you solve a puzzle. But there was also a kind of relief feeling—a sense of “That’s more like it.” Keep that image—and the feeling of release—in mind as we proceed.
Consider how ridiculous it would be for an Olympic runner to strap on a twenty-five pound weight belt be- fore starting his race. Or how much slower a boat would go if it were towing a bucket or sea-anchor.
Of course, no one would deliberately wear extra weights to run a race, or tow a bucket behind a boat if he were in a hurry to get somewhere. Nor would you intentionally drive your car with the brakes on. You wouldn’t get where you were going as fast—and a lot of energy would be wasted, too.
Yet, without realizing it—or intending to do so—you are moving through life with your brakes partly set! The horsepower is there, but vast areas of potential are blocked, bottled up, restricted from effective application. Puzzling? Indeed, and frustrating, too. But that’s not the worst of it.
When you have the ability to do something and that ability is not functioning or flowing the way that you want it to flow, you may find yourself “trying harder”— pressing. Then when that extra grit and determination doesn’t work you may think, “What’s wrong with me, anyway?” In fact, the “try harder” approach may even further diminish the flow of your ability, at the expense of a lot of wasted energy.
Isn’t that a lot like pushing harder on the accelerator when the hand-brake is set? It may work—temporarily. But it is not very good for the system, it wastes energy, and the end result is more likely to be negative than positive!
We know enough about the automobile that, given a choice between pressing harder on the gas pedal or releasing the parking brake, the decision is obvious. Un- fortunately, the human system is not delivered with a set of directions to help you make the best use of its marvelous potential—or to help you to care for it so that it will give long and trouble-free service.
So, here is the manual. As with any such book, we will not attempt to explore all of the details of design and manufacture of the system—only the directions for using it in a productive, effective, satisfying way. The system we will be applying is not a teeth-gritting, will-power, try-hard-to-shape-up method. You have tried that already: I’m going to try hard to get organized! or I’m going to put my will-power to work and stop smok- ing! Probably the harder you tried the more frustrated you became. Now we are going to look at a proven system for releasing that potential, allowing it to flow. You will be surprised at how quickly and how easily it works.
Once the sperm has found the egg and a new life form is begun, the blue- print is set. We can make some minor changes, but the most productive effort would seem to be to get acquainted with what sorts of talents and capacities we may have as a built-in part of the original equipment.
